Set the Table!

Gone are the days of Emily Post’s formal place settings. While the basic ingredients are the same, there’s permission for more individuality and creativity in contemporary “tablescapes.” Toronto-based Sid Starkman, with a background in painting and restaurant design, brings beauty, vulnerability and joy to her tables—and offers up the following tricks of the trade. Sketch and colour in your own place setting; make it your own!

1. A focal point can define the theme and give direction. Once it has been decided, enhance the experience with complementary decor. Think napkins, a tablecloth, plates and flowers—all the little details that bring the table to
life.

2. Lighting and music shape the mood and can make a gathering feel inviting and cohesive.

3. The type of meal—whether potluck, shared dishes or plated—sets the tone for your table and shapes the experience.

4. Hosting is a social, cultural and vulnerable endeavour that thrives on connection. “You want people who will appreciate it,” says Starkman. They’ll enhance the experience and make it feel truly special.
